This is a brief account of the Relanese recorded history. Dates are given in years since Gilish I landed at the mouths of the Goshar river. The Relanese always used this calendar system except briefly in the time of Kulash the Usurper. Because of the confusion after the death of Gilish I, and again in the time of Kulash, some of the earliest dates are uncertain.

1 Gilish landed at the mouths of the Goshar and conquered the Monnar who ruled Relanor in those days. He built the palace of Atonir, the fire towers and the drinol palaces. He also built cities, roads and irrigation canals.

10 As he moved further north Gilish met the dragons of Kishir and the men of the western highlands (the ancestors of the Anthorians). The hill-men were too fierce and too numerous for him, he could not use his horsemen in the hills, and the dragons were too powerful. He ignored the dragons and built a great wall across the western border to keep out the hill-men. This wall was called the Lansheral.

15 Gilish travelled to Kelerish to obtain the Duzral Eye from the Vaults of Duzagen which lay in the Chasm. He emerged from the Chasm mad with power and destroyed most of those who had travelled with him before hurling himself off the Chasm edge.
Relanor was plunged into disorder on Gilish’s death. His only son was a sickly youth who did not outlive him by more than a few months. He managed to father a son, but Relanor was reduced to feudal holdings based around the cities and with no central authority. The drinols were jealous of their power and some tried to kill the young prince.
He fled to the fire towers and hid there several years until he was old enough to rally the loyal Relanese.

32 Gilish II, using an army of Anthorian mercenaries and loyal Relanese conquered, the palace at Atonir and proclaimed himself emperor. He founded the Sons of Gilish, commissioned the Mish-Tal (the sayings and life of Gilish as remembered by those old enough to have known him) and under his rule the Relanese entered a golden age.

81 Mishan I (The Fool) succeeded his father. He was old by the time he came to the throne and he spent his time in idleness and luxury. However, Mishan only reigned for eight years and the impetus of Gilish ll’s reign carried on.

88 Mishan II. His reign was marked by raids from Anthor. The Lansheral had fallen into disrepair and there were several places it could he crossed easily. Like his father, Mishan was given to idleness, but he was popular. Several competent generals held the Anthorians at bay and he rewarded them well.

119 Mishan III (The Fiend) was an evil man. Not only was he idle but he was given to many vices and became unpopular for his outrageous behaviour with the wives of his nobles. He was murdered after only two years.

121 Kulash (The Usurper) was possibly responsible for the murder of Mishan III. Before taking the throne he had been the Drinol of Gashduz. He was a strong emperor and led his armies into battle against the Anthorians. He had the Lansheral repaired and proper patrols placed on it. In his time a small expedition went to Kishir and found that the dragons had gone. No one knew why.

138 When Kulash died he had no children to succeed him and Mishan III had no legitimate heirs. The drinols fought among themselves for the throne for over twenty years and during this time many of the records from the time of Gilish II were destroyed. The children of the second son of Mishan II were hidden in one of the fire towers.

163 Gishirian (The Good) was the grandson of Mishan II. He rebuilt the country and repaired the fortresses that had been destroyed in the civil war.

198 Mishan IV (The Wise) set about collecting what he could of the old books. His reign marked a resurgence of pride and interest in Relanese history.

228 Azkun I (The Merchant) opened trade with the southern lands, expanded the empire into Golshuz and sent some explorers north where they rediscovered Kelerish and the Vorthenki. The Anthorians were still raiding across the Lansheral.

273 Telkun I. The Lansheral was strengthened against raids from Anthor and several punitive expeditions were sent into the hills. Telkun sent an ambassador into Anthor to try and establish more friendly relations with the Anthorians. The ambassador was Roshundrin, a Relanese general who saw great potential in them.

302 Menish I opened trade with Anthor and peaceful relations were established. There was some hostility with renegade clans but Gratha II, king of Anthor, was diligent in suppressing what raiding went on. Rithyhir, the next king, was also friendly. She was especially keen for the Anthorians to learn horsemanship.

323 Telkun II. During his reign a plague brought by the southern traders swept across Relanor. Whole cities were depopulated and Anthor closed its borders briefly in fear. The plague did not affect the high county much, however. Telkun himself died of it.

331 Telkun III set up a new political system based on smaller feudal holdings, breaking down the power of the drinols which had been growing over the years.

387 Menish II. By the time he ascended the throne he was quite old, but the country was well recovered from the plague. A resurgence of culture and learning followed. He encouraged the repair of some of the cities that had not been used since the time of Gilish II. The Sons of Gilish flourished.

399 Telkun IV encouraged the growth of Relanese culture, especially the Sons of Gilish. Their influence became extremely powerful.

450 Telish I was also interested in the Sons of Gilish. In his time a proper priesthood was established outside the fire towers. He died childless.

470 Azkun II was the younger brother of Telish I and was interested in magic and sorcery. He spent much time at the Chasm of Kelerish. It was thought that he might try to enter the Vaults of Duzagen.

522 Telish II. Famines forced more trade with the south. Their harvests had been neglected because of Azkun II’s policies and Relanor had become poor. In the later part of this reign the Gashans began attacking the northern borders of Anthor. Relanese aid was feeble but present.

565 Gilish III (The Warrior). On his ascension Gilish reordered the military structure of the empire. He introduced infantry and built warships. Military power was no longer delegated to the drinols but directly in the hands of the emperor with professional generals commanding under him.
When the Gashans attacked Anthor Gilish III sent his forces to their aid. He led a successful expedition right into the Gashan territory and commissioned the writing of the Gash-Tal. 598 Menish III encouraged further growth of military power and trade with the south was re-established. The sea routes were patrolled by the Relanese navy and communication was established with the Vorthenki in the north as well.

654 Telish III. Severe drought devastated Anthor and the two countries grew closer together. The king of Anthor (Menish I) swore fealty to the emperor.

708 Azkun III succeeded late and did not rule long. Military power declined due to complacency.

718 Azkun IV. This was a time of peace and plenty. Trade declined somewhat due to the good harvests.

743 Azkun V was murdered by a fanatical group soon after he ascended the throne. This plunged the country into civil war as the generals vied for power. He had no children and was the only son of Azkun IV, which made the succession complicated. The civil war lasted nearly 30 years.

771 Telkun V was not of the direct line of Gilish but he was of a noble family and one of the generals. Under his rule the country was put back together and reordered after the civil war. Many of the noble families were all but wiped out by this time.

803 Telkun VI continued the rebuilding of the empire, although the navy was ignored. There was intense interest in the Sons of Gilish at this stage, even from the Anthorians.

837 Telkun VII. Military power declined somewhat although interest in the Relanese culture grew. The Sons of Gilish became more powerful.

886 Telish IV was killed in the battle with Gashan in 892. Relanor was invaded by the Vorthenki soon after and fell into ruin.

922 Vorish. The first Vorthenki emperor emerged after a long civil war. He was the son of Thalissa and he was brought up by Menish who hid him from Thealum until he was old enough to fight for his throne.
